Some warmth during the cold days of winter
Providing a place to relax in the middle of winter, where passersby can stop to admire the city’s winter-themed decorations and marvellous façades or just take a break from a strenuous Holiday shopping expedition—such was the SDC’s idea when it decided to set up warm-up shelters known as Les Zones Chaleureuses on Place Jacques-Cartier in the winter of 2014. Another reason was to breathe some life into the area during the dreary months with a temporary and simple but effective set-up—fanciful in purpose but decorative in itself.
The ideal complement to this wintry facility was some understated Holiday-themed background music piped in to entertain people passing through the square. This pilot project, just the thing for this neighbourhood, went a long way towards cheering up the area and making things more inviting for passersby.
Les Zones Chaleureuses will no doubt be repeated in Old Montreal the next time the snow flies. Some new locations will be set up with fireplaces and Adirondack chairs, no doubt to the great delight of local residents.
